Inhomogeneous strain-induced half-metallicity in bent zigzag graphene nanoribbons

چکیده
Realization of half-metallicity in low dimensional materials is a fundamental challenge for nano spintronics, which is a critical component for next-generation information technology. Using the method of generalized Bloch theorem, we show that an in-plane bending can induce inhomogeneous strains, which in turn lead to spin-splitting in zigzag graphene nanoribbons and results in the highly desired half-metallic state. Unlike the previously proposed scheme that requires unrealistically strong external electric fields, the obtained half-metallicity with sizeable half-metallic gap and high energetic stability of magnetic order of edge states requires only relatively low-level strain in the in-plane bending. Given the superior structural flexibility of graphene and the recent experimental advances in controllable synthesis of graphene nanoribbons, our design provides a hitherto most practical approach to the realization of half-metallicity in low dimensional systems. This work, thus paves a way towards the design of nanoscale spintronic devices through strain engineering.

Layer-selective half-metallicity in bilayer graphene nanoribbons
Half-metallicity recently predicted in the zigzag-edge graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs) and the hydrogenated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) enables fully spin-polarized electric currents, providing a basis for carbon-based spintronics. In both carbon systems, the half-metallicity arises from the edge-localized electron states under an electric field, lowering the critical electric field Dc for the half-me...

Electronic structures of zigzag edged graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs) doped with boron (B) or nitrogen (N) atoms are investigated by spin polarized first-principles calculations. We find that ZGNRs can be tuned to be either semiconducting, half-metallic, or metallic by controlling the distance of the impurity atoms to the edges. A new scheme is identified to achieve full half-metallicity in ZGNRs ...

The established chemical synthetic strategy toward graphene nanoribbons has greatly prompted and justified the research of theoretical designs of novel materials based on graphene. In this paper, we report the novel half-metallicity in C and BN hybrid zigzag nanoribbons even though stand-alone C or BN nanoribbon possesses a finite band gap. By performing first-principles electronic-structure ca...

First-principles investigations on the edge energies and edge stresses of single-layer hexagonal boron-nitride (BN) are presented. The armchair edges of BN nanoribbons (BNNRs) are more stable in energy than zigzag ones. Armchair BNNRs are under compressive edge stress while zigzag BNNRs are under tensile edge stress. The intrinsic spin-polarization and edge saturation play important roles in mo...

We present a comprehensive theoretical study of the electronic properties and relative stabilities of edge-oxidized zigzag graphene nanoribbons. The oxidation schemes considered include hydroxyl, lactone, ketone, and ether groups. Using screened exchange density functional theory, we show that these oxidized ribbons are more stable than hydrogen-terminated nanoribbons except for the case of the...
